#process post homies! That last illo I did was massive, the first few slides in this is to demonstrate how big this artboard is, which may or may not justify the 800+ layers lol. . Next up in the slides you got the usual process stuff I put in these. The flat version to show foundation, the sketch to show you don’t have to be an amazing drawer to illustrate like a designer would, and the grayscale to demonstrate contrast in color. I also added my illustrator artboard, just so you can see how I actually build the pieces out… Like vector legos! (And I get it it’s messy – but it works for me) . I don’t know if it was the best decision to spend so much time on this Illo, but it did absolutely test the limitations of my computer and this style. It also got me out of a bit of illo rust as well. . Hope you enjoyed the process! Quick reminder we got Pop Up Crop @cropcons coming in November 9. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, I believe there are a few left… I hope you can all make it so we can all nerd out about design in person… Over drinks! #whynot . Also I’ll be animating this Illo with the @smashworkshop tools for @adobe premiere. Check them out if you’re someone like me who wants to focus on design and need amazing/easy-to-use animation tools to bring your stuff to life. Check out @designcuts as well… Thats where I get all my textures for this style! . All links are in the bio homies, including a high-res wallpaper/poster of this!

Finally! Back at it my homies with the biggest illustration I’ve done yet in this style. . I’ve made this crazy illo to kick off my series with @smashworkshop , which if you don’t know, is an incredible company that provides creative tools that make the animation process easy. . Inspiration behind this: I’ve been on a lot of boats lately… And for some reason been paying attention to dome like structures. Traveling a lot more lately than usual as well, so the thought of flight came to mind. My brother bought the remaster of Final Fantasy 8, and brought back a ton of memories and how much I like airships. My two governmental agency jobs were for the San Diego Airport and the Port of San Diego… This imagery sums that all up as well lol. I also watched the latest Aladdin movie recently, that must have had a bit of inspo in this. . With this crazy illustration I’ll be animating it (by myself – crazy) with their newly soft-released Animation Builder. If you guys are a designer like me that really just wants to stick to design/illustration and not worry about the technicalities of animation, the @smashworkshop tools are perfect for bringing your static designs to life. -Link in bio homies! . 800+ of painstaking yet rewarding layers later here is this insane illo. I swear I hated myself in the middle of making this… It really pushed this style to technical limits and crashed my computer a couple of times lol. Time to upgrade I guess! . Stay tuned on the progress of this series homies. I’ll be providing a free poster download of this, as well as a process breakdown down the road ?

A quick process shot on the @nasa project. After the initial sketch we get what’s on the left. Color is one of the most important parts of my illo process, and most of the time I choose no more than 5 colors (hues/tints of the same color count as a separate color), no matter how detailed the illustration is. . After that I make sure composition is as awesome as it can be to the point where it can stand alone as its own piece without the bells and whistles of extra detail, lighting, and texturing – build that foundation homies! . On the right is what I just described… lighting (highlights/shadows) and texturing. This part provides that ‘wow’ factor and the ‘I want to touch it’ feeling lol. I think most people that reach out to me about process focus on the technical aspect of this result, where really the most important is what you see on the left: composition/foundation. That was a mouthful lol hope that made sense everyone. . Huge shoutout to @lifeatpurdue , as this project stemmed from another project I worked on with them in collab with Nasa. I will be posting that project in the near future! . Textures provided by @designcuts – link in bio !

2 days ago I did this Illustration for @oracle LIVE in front of 300 or so awesome designers. It was the first day of their annual Design Week event, and I had the pleasure to perform what I do best in front of a room full of Oracle’s amazing design talent. The theme was ‘excellence’ … So I figured I’d create Oracle’s first ‘Sword of Excellence,’ that anyone within the company has the ability to wield. What can I say, back to back @gameofthrones and @avengers got me in this mindset. The day started at 830am, and I had until 345pm to complete this… I honestly don’t know how I was able to do that. It got me so fired up that I can’t wait to do something like this again! Thanks for having me @hillelc @gozel_turkmenistan @oracle , I’d be happy to demo this for y’all anytime. ~Textures I used are from the Woodblock tool that you can get over with my homies @designcuts. Hopefully I’m ending your workweek in a good way with this new Illo! Thanks everyone for tuning in to my stories for the #process on this piece, as well as the incredible feedback and kind words from everyone. I will absolutely continue to share and hammer things out so definitely stick around! I made this piece as a reminder to myself in 2019 to always look towards the bigger picture, while at the same time embracing and enjoying the journey (the process). We will all get to that castle eventually, and at the end of the day we get the most fulfillment moving along the path. — As promised I will be uploading past process stories on this piece in my highlights. Thanks everyone for another amazing year! — Textures from @designcuts — link in bio.
